Dear Editor and Chief:
My name is Alex Del Castillo.  I am a sophomore at Early College High School in Conway.
I am writing to address that same- sex marriage should be allowed in each state.
Marriage should be a right to everyone regardless of their gender.  My best friend, who is as sweet as a teddy bear, cannot get married in most states.  This fact gets her feeling rejected, worthless, and suicidal.  If every state allowed same sex marriage, then more people would feel embraced in society; thus, there would be less pessimistic people.  Blacks and whites didn’t have the right to get married, and now they do!  People think it is wrong because it’s a choice, but in reality research has shown being gay is like being determined if you’re left or right handed.  Everybody has the right to love whomever they want.  If homosexual marriage was allowed, then there would be fewer children in foster homes.  Love is kind, and only good can come from legalizing gay marriage.
Thank you so much for your time.  I appreciate your help and hope to hear from you soon.
Sincerely,
Alex Del Castillo

Stop and...

Stop and...

I’m walking wonderfully on the beach
With my dear lover at hand
While I see people stop…  Stop and stand.
Stand to point
    And…
Stand to laugh.
I feel ashamed…
But why?
Why should I?
Should I hide who I am?
No.
People say it’s a choice
But in reality it’s not.
It’s like being determined if you’re a lefty at hand.
Blacks went through something similar and
Now they can get married to whomever they please
So why can’t we get married with ease?
I stare far out to the seas
and listen to the soothing, sociable, splash of waves
and realize HEY
you see what I see
a beautiful world we share
where we can all just stop...  stop and stare...
 stare at the beauty
not…
at the differences in each other.
I turn to the people
they turn to me
and I say…
Why not just let us be?
Marriage is about love
not hate.
so why not just appreciate?
Hate, hate, hate!
That’s all we get.
Most of us would change I bet
but alas we can not
for it is not a choice nor option
But hey! We can provide adoption!
Many things could come from giving us rights
So put us to equivalent heights!
All these doors could be open
if you could give us back what was stolen…
Love is like the ocean we see
so please just let us be.
Now we all stop… stop and see…
See the ocean… that’s as free as can be.

Same Sex Marriage: To Be or Not To Be?
My parents have the right to get married, but my best friend does not.  Same sex marriage is not allowed in most of The United States.  I find this fact to be unfathomable.  If you go out to the beach or to the mall you will most likely see a male and a female holding hands with a marriage ring on their finger, but you will rarely see a same sex couple holding hands with a marriage ring on their finger.  The reason for this is because lots of same sex couples are stripped of their rights.  Another reason for this is because they are loathed by many.  To not be able to hold your lover’s hand in public must be like getting stabbed in the heart in front of a crowd.  Marriage should be a right for us all, and not just for people who are straight.  Being gay is not a choice; therefor, marrying the same sex should not be frowned upon.  Blacks and whites were not able to get married for a very long time, and now you see mixed-race couples everywhere!  Right now gays are not able to get married in most of the United States.   Sooner or later homosexuals will be able to get married everywhere; in conclusion, why not legalize it sooner rather than later?  People should have the right to marry whomever they want.  Love is love and there is nothing we can do about it, so why not just let it be?  If gay marriage was legalized there would be less stressed out people, and people would feel less ashamed; therefore, we must legalize same sex marriage for the sake of humanity.
Jessika is an amazing, terrific, funny, outgoing, nice person.  She is a great person to talk to, and to be with.  I love this girl to death.  Everyone who meets her adores her!  Sadly, Jessika does not have the same rights as a straight individual.  She, as of now, cannot get married to another female in the state of South Carolina.  This fact gets me as sad as a rainy day.  If you look into Jessika’s eyes you can see fireworks of happiness and kindness.  Why should someone, as nice as a teddy bear, not have the rights to marry someone they are in love with?  She knows that she cannot get married in many states, and she gets a bit down when she realizes it.  It is not like her getting married is affecting anyone, so why can’t she?  Whenever she goes out in public with her girlfriend holding hands people always stare.  This gets her feeling ashamed, which she should not feel.  I think if same sex marriage was allowed in each state then gay couples would be able to hold each other’s hand in public without feeling ashamed.  She should be able to hold her paramour’s hand in public without people staring.  She feels that her holding another girl’s hand should be as normal as a boy holding a girl’s hand.  Thankfully she is able to get married in some states, but her and I both hope that one day she will be able to have the same rights as a straight person, and will be able to get married in any state.  She once said “I’m like any other person, but I like my own sex.”  What she said is true, she’s just like everyone else, but she likes her own sex, so why not just treat her like anyone else, and let her have the right to get married?  Hopefully one day she will have the opportunity to get married in any state that she chooses.
Through research I found the article “Same- Sex Legal Marriage and Psychological Well-Being: Findings from the California Health Interview Survey,” which has tons of great facts about gay marriage, and straight marriages.  The article states “Same-sex married lesbian, gay, and bisexual persons were significantly less distressed than lesbian, gay, and bisexual persons not in a legally recognized relationship; married heterosexuals were significantly less distressed than non-married heterosexuals.”  This basically says that people who were marriage, and had the right to be married, where less stressed than people who were not able to get married.  It has been shown through research that married gay couples are less stressed than gay couples that cannot get married.  It has also been shown that in states that allow same sex marriage, there is a healthier relationship with homosexuals, and heterosexuals.  These are just a few reasons why same sex marriage should be allowed in each state.
I plan to learn more about same sex marriage because I think everyone has the right to marry whomever they want.  There should not be a difference between a straight marriage, and a same sex marriage.  I want to know exactly what stops states from allowing same sex marriage.  I want to learn the positives and negatives about same sex marriage.  I want to stand up for people who do not have the right to marry their own sex.  I want to be their voice, and speak out.  I want to get people aware of the difference there is when people have the right to get married, and don’t have the right to get married.  I want to show people that allowing same sex marriage would be a good for humanity and not a bad thing.  Straight people did not have to fight for their rights, so why should gay people?  I believe that same sex marriages should be allowed in each state.
